Why Bulgaria, in plain terms

It is in the EU and in the eurozone since the start of 2026, so contracts, invoices, VAT and data protection are the same legal frame you already work in. No import paperwork, no currency surprises, no GDPR transfer questions, because the data never leaves the union.

The time zone is the practical part. CET plus one gives you a full overlapping day with Europe and a working morning with the US East Coast, which is why a lot of Western companies staff here rather than further east.

And the arithmetic is unromantic: living costs here are a third of Amsterdam, so a rate that is comfortable for me is a saving of 60 to 70 percent for you, with no drop in the stack, the tooling or the review standard.

What I am not the right call for

  • A team of five. I am one person and I will tell you so rather than subcontract quietly.
  • Native mobile apps, iOS or Android. I build web applications that work well on a phone, which is not the same thing.
  • Enterprise Java, .NET or a legacy PHP monolith that needs maintaining rather than replacing.
  • Work that needs an on site presence more than a few days a quarter.
  • A project where the requirement is still an argument inside your company. Settle it first, then hire.

How do you invoice, and what about VAT?
A normal EU invoice from a registered Bulgarian company, Жижево Стоун ЕООД, company number 207206318. Between VAT registered EU businesses the reverse charge applies, so no VAT is added on the invoice. Clients outside the EU are invoiced without VAT. Payment in euro by bank transfer, 14 day terms.
What about a contract and an NDA?
I sign your NDA and your contractor agreement. If you would rather use mine, it is two pages: scope, rate, notice period, and an IP assignment that puts everything I write in your name from the moment it is written.
Who owns the intellectual property?
You do, from the first commit. The work is made for hire, it lives in your repository, and there is no licence back to me. I keep the right to say publicly that we worked together, and only if you agree.
What are the working hours?
Sofia is CET plus one. A 9 to 6 day here is 8 to 5 in Berlin, 7 to 4 in London and 2 in the morning to 11 in New York, so the overlap is your morning. Stand ups in your morning are comfortable at both ends.
What happens if you get sick or disappear?
The honest answer to the single risk of hiring one person: everything is in your repository and your cloud from day one, documented as it is written, so another developer can continue without a handover from me. I also do not take more work than I can deliver, which is why there is no bench and no availability calendar.
Can you work with our existing team?
Yes, and most of the retainer work is exactly that. I take tickets, open pull requests, review other people’s code and stay inside the conventions the team already uses. I do not arrive with opinions about your CI.
Do you do design as well?
I design what I build, to the level you see on the sites above. If you have a designer or a design system, I build to it. If you need brand identity or illustration, hire someone who does that properly.
How do we start without risk?
A small fixed scope piece, one to two weeks, at a fixed price. It tells you more about how somebody works than any interview, and if it goes badly you have lost a fortnight instead of a quarter.
