Automated plus manual testing

Scanners catch about a third of real problems. The rest is a person going through the site with a keyboard and a screen reader, which is the part most cheap audits skip.

WCAG 2.1 AA, the standard the law names

EN 301 549 incorporates WCAG 2.1 Level AA in full, and that is what enforcement checks against. Each finding cites the specific criterion it breaks.

Prioritised by user impact

Findings sorted by who is actually blocked, not by how many warnings a tool printed. A checkout nobody can complete outranks forty decorative images.

The fixes, not just the list

Contrast, focus states, labels, alternative text, headings, form errors and keyboard order implemented in the code, then retested against the same criteria.

What the law says, in four sentences

The European Accessibility Act sets common accessibility requirements for a list of products and services sold to EU consumers, including e commerce, banking, transport and telecoms. It has been enforceable since 28 June 2025.

The technical standard behind it in Europe is EN 301 549, which incorporates WCAG 2.1 Level AA in full. In practice, conformance with WCAG 2.1 AA is what an auditor checks.

Microenterprises providing services, under 10 employees and under 2 million euro turnover, are exempt from the service obligations. Everyone else selling online to EU consumers is in scope.

Enforcement is national. Each member state names an authority, a complaints route and its own penalties, which is why the published maximums differ so much between countries.

The gap is not quality, it is that there is no agency in the middle. The manual pass is the part that matters and it is included at every tier here.

Do it now or do it later

  • Built in from the start, accessibility adds close to nothing to a project. It is contrast, labels and focus states, decided once.
  • Retrofitted calmly, it is a two to three week job on a normal site.
  • Retrofitted after a complaint, with a deadline from an authority, it is the same work at emergency speed while somebody senior watches.
  • If a rebuild is on the table anyway, do both at once: WordPress to Next.js migration.

How to get an exact price

What are the penalties?
Enforcement is national, so the amounts differ by country, and published figures run up to 100,000 euro or a percentage of annual revenue in the stricter member states. The realistic first step is usually a complaint and an order to fix within a deadline, not an instant fine.
The deadline passed in June 2025. Am I already in trouble?
Not automatically. 2026 is the first full year of active supervision and most authorities are working through complaints. Being visibly in progress, with an audit, a fix plan and a published statement, is a very different position from having done nothing.
Can I just install an accessibility overlay widget?
No, and I would not take money to install one. Overlays are widely criticised by disability organisations, they do not fix the underlying markup, and in several countries they have not protected anyone from a complaint. Fixing the code costs about the same once and actually works.
Will this break my design?
Almost never. The common fixes are darker text, a visible focus ring, real labels and a sane heading order. Where a brand colour genuinely fails contrast I will show you the nearest shade that passes, and you decide.
Is accessible the same as good for SEO?
They overlap a lot. Alternative text, heading structure, link text that means something, and content that does not depend on scripts help both a screen reader and a crawler. It is one of the few compliance jobs that pays for itself in traffic.
What does it cost to keep compliant?
Nothing recurring from me. The fixes live in the components, so new pages inherit them, and the guide tells your team what to watch when adding content. A re audit once a year is sensible if the site changes a lot, not mandatory.
Can you work on a site you did not build?
Yes, that is most of this work. WordPress, Shopify, a custom build, it does not matter for the audit. For the fixes I need access to the theme or the code, and if the platform makes a fix impossible I will say so plainly.
